“Dedicated as a witness to God”
The world’s smallest church can be found resting upon a small wooden platform in the middle of a small lake off Sconondoa Road in the small town of Oneida, near Syracuse. It’s known as the Cross Island Chapel, but don’t let the name fool you––there’s no island at all, the tiny church just sits on a sort of makeshift dock in the middle of the pond. A few feet away a wooded cross is wedged into a pile of rocks that do breach the water’s surface and may qualify as an “island.” According to a sign posted on dry land nearby, the non-denominational Cross Island Chapel was built in 1989 and “Dedicated as a witness to God.” The sign also states that it is open to the public upon request and available for special occasions and meditation. Although regular services are not held in this odd little chapel, which measures about three feet by six feet, ceremonies can be scheduled by appointment. You’d better have a pretty small family though if you’re thinking of booking it for a wedding, as it church only contains two seats and can barely hold the bride, groom and minister, let alone a wedding party.
This is not the right address. Go to Sconondoa rd in Oneida, New York.
It is a cute church. I thought it was cool to see. All you can do is take a picture. Dont expect anything else. Its about a one minute stop.
Fine place to get out and stretch our legs, but kinda out of the way from the tollway. It is out on the water, so you can only stand and look from the road. You can go in or see the inside. Rather a meh stop.
It’s so cute ! If going to Niagara Fall u have to stop by and take pic . Make memories with family
Every bit as adorable as it looks! Very quaint and very serene. The Adirondack chairs make you want to sit and stay a while and maybe pray. It's on a very quiet street parking was no problem for our truck and 5th wheel. So glad we stopped!
This was the cutest! Glad we saw it. Watch out for the duck poop. Neighbors were not very friendly either. Still a nice thing to see.
Totally cool be sure to add a bit of time so you can take the boat out and go inside!
Very quirky and fun little site to see about 5 minutes off the highway. Great opportunity to take a cool picture if you need to take a quick pit stop anyway! Definitely recommend stopping off if you’re driving past it anyway! (:
